Was it when he heard Ali Akbar’s final adhan,
and watched his young son return, never again?
Was it when he took Ali Asghar from Rubab’s arms,
and carried him into the battlefield?
Was it when Qasim cried out in pain,
and Hussain arrived to find his nephew torn among the slain?
Was it when Ghazi, wounded and weak,
called “my brother” with his last breath to speak?
Was it when he had to leave Sakina behind,
as she clung to Zuljinah, refusing to say goodbye?
Was it when he looked into Zainab’s eyes,
knowing the trials that awaited her after his rise?
Or was it when he called, “Hal min nasirin yansurna,”
and the silence of Karbala gave its answer?
O sand of Karbala, you alone can say—
how many times Hussain (alayhis salam) broke on that day.
