Sincere advice for people new to islam:
From a Revert….

• Be humble. Keep it private. It’s not a performance. Your immediate focus should be on building genuine relationship (Taqwa) with God (Allah) before you show the world.
• Marriage is important, but there are things you must be ready for before you marry, particularly men. Seek knowledge, you can not lead any woman if you know little deen.
• Brothers — get a JOB. There is no 50/50 in islam. Time to pull your socks up. Forget your pipe dreams. It’s time to be reliable and dependable financially for the sake of Allah, your wife and future Muslim family.
• Sisters — Read your Qur’an, it came to elevate your status and restore your dignity. Know your rights within islam, and learn the rights of your future husband.
• Find a local or online Shiekh Academy to study under, too many different schools of thought will fry your brain, find a Shiekh / Ustadh you are comfortable with that suits your learning style and keep it there. (This can be a process) Once you have the basics of your deen, you may choose to branch out and explore madhab/manhaj options, not before.
• Attend MULTIPLE masjids (mosques) not just your local one. Find a few that suit you, whether close of far, make the effort to attend them. The masjid is a core part of your social spiritual emotional development.
• When at masjid, get talking, introduce yourself, communicate your intention to learn and ask if there are any private ‘Halaqah’ you can sit in on. Your close network of Muslims is VITAL, in early days.
• Do not learn a few things and then immediately engage in Dawah. (Debating/Teaching Islam) If you know something for for certain then humbly share with persons who are willing to listen, if you don’t know, say you don’t know, don’t be frustrated you don’t know, refer them to persons of knowledge. Allah (Awj) forbids us from speaking about things we have no knowledge of.
• GET OFF THE INTERNET — Social media is a cesspool of anti Islamic mess at the moment, do not underestimate how the mass amount of fitna designed to reduce your imman, and destroy your beliefs can and will effect you. If you must be online use it quickly and come away. Or tailor your social media page to ONLY following Muslims; this way the algorithm will generally provide Islamic content.
• Cut out the music — slowly. Replace it with Qur’an, you will notice a huge difference in your positive energy, general mental health and wellbeing.
• If you can afford to — Travel, specifically to Muslim countries. It’s important to see, feel, hear islam outside of a western environment.
• Muslims Are Not Perfect!!! — Stop losing faith in Islam because of issues you may have with Muslims. Muslims are human beings who like you are trying to do better, but often fall into sin, just like you. Focus on Allah. Islam (Qur’an & Sunnah) is perfect. Not Muslims.
• Give Islam — TIME. Anything between 4-6 years is adequate period for you to learn, travel, practice, experience Islam to make a honest assessment.
• Don’t compare yourself to born Muslims. They have been on the deen since 7 years of age, in many cases, you are a baby, slow steps for the sake of Allah, not for the sake of other Muslims.
• You may be criticised, or called out on things, you say, or do, this is not “Haram Police” this is ISLAM, take it on the chin, and gain great pleasure that you are apart of a religion that has preserved itself; is free of innovation, has not been compromised or corrupted because we take pride in correcting our brothers and sisters when they go stray / deviate.
• You might unintentionally and intentionally miss Salah sometimes. You might get frustrated with Salah. You might not have the energy for your Salah you once had.
— It’s OK. It’s not easy to make Salah 5 times per day; at first. Allah Knows what is in your heart, keep on your study, play Qur’an, keep close to your Muslim family and inshallah, Allah will provide a stimulus; motivation, impetus to get back on that prayer mat! When it becomes a habit, Salah is something that has great benefit, physically, emotionally, socially (Jummah) and spiritually, Salah keeps Allah (Awj’s) name wet on your tongue and (as such) you in deep connection with your creator…
• Lastly, You will hear many negative things about Islam. Do not let the kufr (non believers) trick you out of your spot. Trick you away from Islam. There is an adequate answer for EVERYTHING, for each of his commands a reason that benefits YOU.
You should note down all of your contentions and concerns and take them weekly to your Shiekh / Teacher; get second and third opinions, go to local dawah stalls and alternative mosques and ask, do not be hasty and become misled to falsehood.
