Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's Toriko, 2008

Toriko feels like a love letter to excess. It takes the familiar shōnen framework and pushes it through a bizarre gourmet lens where appetite, strength, and imagination are all the same thing. At its best, the series is wildly creative, using food not as a gimmick but as the backbone of its worldbuilding, with ecosystems and power systems built around taste and hunger. The Dragon Ball influence is obvious in the art, escalation, and bombastic tone, but Toriko distinguishes itself through sheer inventiveness and scale. While it can stumble into repetition and uneven pacing, its influence is clear in how later manga felt more confident blending niche passions with high stakes action rather than keeping them separate.
