The purpose of mahr in Islam is to honour the bride, not to turn marriage into a financial transaction.

A commonly quoted amount is 480 dirhams, which is approximately 1,470g of silver. At a silver price of around £1.45 per gram, that works out to roughly £2,131.50.

This raises a genuine question:

If we encourage following the Sunnah in other aspects of our lives, why are some families demanding mahr amounts or additional gifts that place an unnecessary financial burden on the groom?

I know someone whose marriage ended after his wife's family demanded an extra £10,000 worth of gold, despite the agreed mahr already having been paid. When he refused, the marriage broke down. Years later, he is still paying child maintenance but has not been able to see his child.

No one knows every detail of any marriage, and every story has two sides. However, when money becomes more important than justice, mercy, and family, everyone loses—especially the children.

Islam teaches fairness to both husband and wife. It discourages greed, oppression, and making marriage unnecessarily difficult. We should be asking ourselves whether some cultural expectations have started to overshadow the values that Islam actually promotes.
