IS THERE A SCRIPTURAL BASIS FOR BOYCOTT?
سورة النساء
وَ مَا کَانَ لِمُؤۡمِنٍ اَنۡ یَّقۡتُلَ مُؤۡمِنًا اِلَّا خَطَئًا ۚ وَ مَنۡ قَتَلَ مُؤۡمِنًا خَطَئًا فَتَحۡرِیۡرُ رَقَبَۃٍ مُّؤۡمِنَۃٍ وَّ دِیَۃٌ مُّسَلَّمَۃٌ اِلٰۤی اَہۡلِہٖۤ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ یَّصَّدَّقُوۡا ؕ فَاِنۡ کَانَ مِنۡ قَوۡمٍ عَدُوٍّ لَّکُمۡ وَ ہُوَ مُؤۡمِنٌ فَتَحۡرِیۡرُ رَقَبَۃٍ مُّؤۡمِنَۃٍ ؕ وَ اِنۡ کَانَ مِنۡ قَوۡمٍ ۢ بَیۡنَکُمۡ وَ بَیۡنَہُمۡ مِّیۡثَاقٌ فَدِیَۃٌ مُّسَلَّمَۃٌ اِلٰۤی اَہۡلِہٖ وَ تَحۡرِیۡرُ رَقَبَۃٍ مُّؤۡمِنَۃٍ ۚ فَمَنۡ لَّمۡ یَجِدۡ فَصِیَامُ شَہۡرَیۡنِ مُتَتَابِعَیۡنِ ۫ تَوۡبَۃً مِّنَ اللّٰہِ ؕ وَ کَانَ اللّٰہُ عَلِیۡمًا حَکِیۡمًا ﴿۹۲﴾
And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. So whoever kills a believer by mistake, then [the expiation is] freeing of a believing slave and a complete compensation payment to his (i.e. the deceased's) family unless they give [up their right as] charity. But if he (i.e. the deceased) was from a people at war with you and he was a believer, then [only] freeing of a believing slave. And if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty, then a complete compensation payment to his family and freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find, then [instead] fasting for two months consecutively; acceptance of repentance from Allah. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
{Quran 4:92}
If a muslim kills another muslim by mistake or accident, there are three scenarios of expiation:

Free a muslim slave and pay blood money to the victim's family.
-
If the victim belonged to a warring, hostile nation/tribe/people (i.e. fighting against Islam and Muslims); then free a muslim slave only.
-
If the victim was from a nation/tribe/people with whom there is a treaty, then free a muslim slave and pay blood money to the victim's family.
The 2nd scenario is interesting. It appears that the wisdom behind this law is that we withhold financial benefit from the enemies of Islam and Muslims. Paying blood money to those who were spending their wealth against Islam, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and Muslims made no sense. But the Quran wasn't sent just for 7th century Arabs. It provides timeless guidance. So we need to be able to see the verses of the Quran in the present age and context.
When Israel resumed its genocide of the Palestinians in 2023 with help from the Western countries, some scholars said that boycotting the products made by them is optional. Although people weren't taking guidance directly from the Quran, it appealed to their moral sense to withhold financial benefit from those who are spending their wealth against Islam and Muslims. The advocates of the boycott didn't have a scriptural basis though. But this verse gives them that and proves that they were acting in accordance with Allah's commands.
What we need to do is spread awareness amongst Muslims. This should be taken to the scholars. They should check it, and then give their opinions accordingly. And the masses need to be educated about it.
