With “Goulo Hey”, Jalal El Hamdaoui created a Moroccan reinterpretation inspired by the worldwide success of Las Ketchup’s The Ketchup Song (Aserejé), one of the biggest international pop phenomena of the cassette and CD era. The original song became a global hit in 2002 and itself played with references to old-school rap culture. But “Goulo Hey” wasn’t only a copy it reflects that moment where Moroccan popular music adapted international trends into something local, festive, and familiar.
