One thing I've realised is that when you have a connection with the Qur'an, it's as though you've been given a lens through which to see the truth of things.

The Qur'an shows you how people move through this dunya and what often drives them. Allah says:

"Competition in worldly increase distracts you, until you visit the graves." (Surah At-Takathur 102:1–2)

It exposes the tricks of Shaytan. Allah tells us:

"Shaytan threatens you with poverty and commands you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:268)

And Allah repeatedly reminds us that Shaytan is our clear enemy:

"Indeed, Shaytan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:168; see also Surah Fatir 35:6)

Death is like the great unveiling. Nothing wakes a person up more than the reality of what comes after it. Allah says:

"You were certainly in heedlessness of this; now We have removed from you your cover, so your sight today is sharp." (Surah Qaf 50:22)

The more a person lives with the Qur'an, the more they begin to see things as they truly arebeyond appearances, beyond desires, and beyond the deceptions of this temporary world.

I often have these thoughts after a janazah. I went to one a couple of days ago. A distant relative, young and obviously his family couldn't fathom something like that would happen. He went out to the park, like we all do, but he never came back.

I think one of the most beautiful things is being in someone’s doa during Arafah, imagine your name being whispered in a prayer on such a sacred day.
